Possible way to backup your digital downloads.
« on: March 07, 2012, 11:31:00 AM »
Someone was asking  on EA's forum about backing up a downloaded game. About half way down is a response from EA_NinotheRobot telling how to move a download from one computer to another.
If I'm understanding it right it should work for making a backup to reinstall later without have to download it again. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this or knows if I'm looking at it right or just seeing what I want to see. :)

Here's a quote of the response in question.

In regards to making a backup copy of your games here's a workaround for moving your downloaded/installed game to another computer:

1. Allow Origin to fully download and install your game.

2. Copy the entire game directory (Example Battlefield Bad Company™ 2 Digital Deluxe Edition is 8.33 GB).
Now you have basically three options. A: Transfer these files to the other computer over your home network. B: Transfer to a USB key that has enough space then transfer to the other computer. C: Burn files onto a dual layer DVD (This option requires a special drive and space is limited so you may need to span the files across two discs).

3. Once the files are on the other computer in the directory where you normally install your games, navigate to the directory called ""__Installer\DISK1"".

4. Find the EASetup.exe file and run it.
Running this file will create the proper registry keys you need for the game to be detected and launch properly from Origin.

Looking in one of my downloaded EPs, Pets, There is a _Installer Folder and a setup file named Sims3EP05Setup.exe
So if I am understanding it right I could copy my Pets folder to a backup drive and when reinstalling copy the Pets folder back and run the set file and it would create the proper registry keys be good to go.
I wish I had found this before I done a complete reinstall yesterday and could have tested it.
A clear conscience is usually a sign of a bad memory.

I was just wondering about this as I just did a reinstall of the game and all EPS and SPs. I have bought lots of things from the EA store and I'm downloading it all again. I am on a Mac. Do you know if I just saved my download folder to a DVD, would that be an installable backup for all the CC content I have bought from the store?
