The men and women of the Sauveterre family have two traits in common: passion, and a tendency to over-do things. They pursue the hobbies and careers and activities with unending patience and enthusiasm... but in the process, they tend to forget about other aspects of life-- such as jobs, and cleaning, and making friends, and finding family.
Jean Sauveterre is an avid alchemist-- successful not so much by nature, as by effort. He's spent long hours poring over ancient texts and modern websites, using cauldrons and Bunsen burners, to gain as much knowledge. (It's no coincidence that his love for alchemy has also led him to spending a great deal of time in his garden; Jean also has a deep and abiding love for forests and meadows and the great outdoors.)
He's learned the ins and outs of alchemy... but unfortunately, not how to make a living. His experiments used up most of the money inherited from a great-aunt, and what's left is enough to either buy a well-furnished house or to live in a small, cheap place. On top of that, alchemy isn't a group activity, so while his social skills are adequate, he's never really made any connections with others... nor has he found the one thing he wants more than even the rarest of recipes or the most exotic of ingredients: someone to love.
