How many traits can pets have?

I've got two dogs and they both have 6 traits and I have two horses but I've only been able to get them up to 5 traits.
Can the horses have more than 5 traits like the dogs? And can the dogs have more than 6 traits?
I haven't had any cats yet so was wondering how many traits they can have.

I've read in some places that there really isn't a specific number of traits they can have (I guess you could possibly attain all the hidden traits if you wanted too). The main thing is the traits they have been trained to do can be lost if you don't keep up with it. You can only give your pet 3 traits in CAP and the rest you have to train them.
If you scroll down towards the middle of the page it gives you all the traits you can get for your specific pet. [Link removed. - Pam]

Oops my bad Pam, I was already pursuing that website when I found that page and linked it instead of Carl's guide.
