Computer shutting down when loading saved game.
« on: November 06, 2011, 05:12:33 PM »
I have no idea what's wrong!  I was playing like normal, then it started to get a little slow, and then the whole computer shut down.  I have a samsung, and yes, sometimes it does this, but I tried loading the game again, got to the main menu, and was loading my saved game when *oops* bye bye computer screne goes blank and I have to start it all up again.  any thoughts?  The only weird thing I can think of is that earlier today I deleted my DCbackup files while the game was open.  Except I was able to play for a while after that.  I'm running a virus scan and I disk cleanup'ed.  HELP!

I'm no technical expert, but I don't think it was safe to delete any files while actually running the game. My laptop doesn't even let me do that, it tells me to shut down the game first! Are your system requirements good for the game?

Even though you were deleting DCBackup, I agree it's never safe to do that. Just imagine - if EA let you do that, you might accidentally delete some core script while playing, which would obviously not be good.

If your computer is shutting down completely and not just crashing to desktop then I suspect you have a hardware issue.  Perhaps it is getting overheated.

The others are right, do not delete anything while your game is running.  You can do what you like with screenshots but you should not touch anything else..

The possibilities might be:
-overheating CPU - I had that. Just use a new layer of paste on the processor.
-broken RAM - replace it with a new one.
-graphics drivers got messed up - reinstall older ones or reinstall the system totally. I had this problem once - my computer reseted randomly in games. After reinstalling the system and installing graphics drivers it was fine.

The easiest way to check if your laptop is overheating is checking if it's hot with your hand. Do it when the game slows down. You can always use some programs to check the CPU temperature.

Are you able to start a new game in a fresh town?

If so, I suspect you buggered up your save game when you deleted those files.  If you're unable to start a new game in a fresh town (including playing a sim in that town - test that everything works for 15-20 minutes), then I'd go with the above posts.

Actually a laptop should never have been called a laptop because it should never be sat on your lap. Laptops are susceptible to overheating, especially in the ram and video/graphics card regions. The best way to use a laptop is to have it on a hard surface.

Regarding the game shutting the computer down, I highly doubt that this would be a software issue. I have been working as an engineer for almost 10 years and unless you delete actual system files then the computer would not terminate due to missing files. The game may not start and it may crash to the desktop and refuse to function but this would not cause a computer to completely power down.

If this only happens when you start the game then I would suspect a hardware malfunction, possibly due to overheating or over processing. I would suggest that you start at the basics, get canned air and ensure that all your fans are working. If that doesn't work if you are technologically savvy then ensuring all the component drivers are up to date.

If the laptop is in warranty then I would suggest giving the company a call and having them pick it up because they will check and/or replace anything faulty. If it is out of warranty then a good techy friend or business will be your best bet.

In future, general maintenance is the key to keeping any computer running the way it was intended. It can be time consuming and frankly a pain in the behind but this is the only way to ensure that you get the best out of you computer. There are awesome threads on here about basic maintenance and how to keep your game running at it's best.

Kindest regards
KJ
