How do i make custom content appear in the game?

I've been going crazy about this for a while now. I have the Sims 3 pets, I installed all my custom content on the launcher but then I played, and there was nothing there! I don't know how to set anything up, I'm a first time sims player, so step by step would be really helpful.

My first question is...  are you talking about custom content that you purchased from the Sims 3 Store or downloaded from the Sims 3 Exchange?  Or do you mean third party custom content from a different website?  This information will let us give you the proper information.
