Minor animal spots for AP?

I don't have either, actually. I knew Sims 3 came out but i was waiting for all the expansions, specifically pets, before upgrading from my current sims 2. Come december, I'm gonna be getting the Sims 3 deluxe & the pets expansion, then hopefully every month after that i could get another expansion or stuff pack until i have everything i want for the game.
So, anyways, that's my plan.

I've found a number of reptiles, so the info for the rodents is very useful, but I still have a couple of problems.
1. I only get the option to 'watch' birds not catch them, have I missed something?
2. The beasties that the cat catches do not seem to count towards the Zoologist LTW, am I doing something wrong here too? I take them direct from the cats backpack is there another way to get them?
If anyone knows the answers I would be very grateful!

If the action befriend bird don't come up it is because the terrain is uneven. Your sim must catch it himself.

I had a feeling the sim must make the catch, however I thought the guide said you could use a cat to help, I must have read it wrong,or too quickly! But when it comes to uneven ground the first bird I found was on a flat path in the graveyard and the second in my sims garden, also flat so maybe I have a glitch, I don't know. But thanks for the help anyway.

There is a hidden collecting skill that goes with the minor pets.  If you come across a large bird and you are unable to befriend it, it's because this skill is not high enough.  After you've caught enough pets, it should raise enough for you to befriend some of the rarer birds.

There is also a large bird spawning spot in the backyard of the Bird sisters.  I'm playing them right now and a new large bird appears there everyday.  I sell it, but keep the bird tree in the backyard, just in case it's helping the birds to appear.
