My sims son can't salute even though his father is in the military, any explanation?

What level is the father?  I think maybe the saluting only starts when the child is born after the parent is at a certain level.  Although, I can't say for sure what that level needs to be.

The dad is 7, does it matter what level he was when the child was born?

Yes, the concensus around here is that the child would need to be born after dad reaches a certain level.

Any kids born after this point will probably be able to salute.

Actually, I found out recently (because like I said in one of my other posts, I needed to try out some different career paths, one being Military), that you can still salute to them once they reach the career path and the child has already been born before that... that sounded confusing, let me try to reword that:
My father in this household started in the Military Career as soon as he turned into a Y.A., he was married then too and they started having children right away. He is now level 6 in the career track and whenever he clicks on the "friendly" action with one of his daughters or anyone, he can chose "Salute" and they will salute back. I'm sure if he gets all the way up the career track that the other Sim will have that option as well. :)

But can the child salute first?  The descendents get the hidden trait from the original military career Sim.  Can you click on someone using the child and get the salute interaction?

Hm, I'll have to check that one, let me see, I have 4 children of that one Sim, so he would be a great contestant for this because they were all born at different times! Right now I have one child about to turn into a teen, another that just turned into a child, a baby that just turned into a toddler and a baby. All girls (if that makes a difference. I'll see if the children can salute and then I'll get back to you when the baby and toddler grow up and see if they can too.) This should be interesting.

Hi all, my sim Daniel has been in the military and retired as astronaut.  He and his wife had a child after he became astronaut, mainly cause he could care for the baby as he only worked one day a week.  I believe their daughter could salute when she became a youth, which I thought was cute.  I also remember reading that her children will be able to carry that hidden trait also...I think. :P

I have the idea that he had to be high up in that career, maybe level 8 or 9 before he could salute anyone.  Don't quote me on that though, that was a long time ago as he is ready to die of old age now. :D

Everyone who is a direct descendant of Daniel will have the Salute hidden trait.  I had it carry on for about 6 or 7 generations.

In Level 4 in the description it says - As Squad Leader you will start to draw Salutes from your Underlings. I think that is what it says, I went into the game to check so its pretty close.
