Do Your Elder Sims Seem Cranky?
« on: May 23, 2011, 01:34:53 PM »
Now that I have a house full of elders in my dynasty it seems to me that they are more cranky and/or senile than they seemed to be when they were YA and adult.  This might just be because when they were YA and A I spent a lot of time controlling them whereas now I'm focusing on gens 7 and 8 so gens 1-6 pretty much get to do what they want as long as it doesn't jeopardize the dynasty (I have a few sneaky elders who seem to go to great lenghts to cook...go figure!  When I get to be their age I want to have someone cook for me!  Heck, who am I kidding, I want that right now!).

It just seems that when they were the center of my simverse they rarely had negative interactions and did whatever I asked.  Now that they are elderly they seem to be not as 'nice' as they were when they were holding down jobs and raising families, and often times I have to ask several times before they will actually do what I want them to (not unlike my own real-life mom, LOL - wait - I shouldn't laugh, that's gonna be me in a few more years!  :o )

Has anyone else noticed this?  Do you think it's because when I was paying more attention to them I was making them play nice or do you think the game's developers really tried to capture the essence of a crotchety person who has lived their life and just doesn't give a hoot about what other people think anymore.

Before anyone gets upset with the question, please know that I mean no disrespect - I have gotten much less 'nice' the farther I get into middle age and I will be the first to admit it.  I'm watching it happen to my mom and I saw it happen to my grandmother.  On the other hand, my grandfather was possibly the nicest person I ever knew and he remained so until he passed away at age 88, so I know I'm making a gross overgeneralization.  But I think it is at least safe to say that I'm seeing some qualities in my older sims that I, unfortunately, regcognize in myself.

Interesting question, Katluvr.  It's a while since I played a houseful of elders - not since I finished my own dynasty, and that's been several months.  But I didn't have any trouble with their moods or social interactions at all.  They remained the same friendly, playing-in-the-sprinklers lot they had always been.  I didn't have trouble with dropped interactions, any more than usual.  It sounds like your elders have more free time than they used to (I mean time when you're not directing them), so I'm wondering if they have traits that might cause them to act out more when left to their own devices?

Fortunately their moods have been fine - I do my best to make sure they are happy and I blast them with the moodlet manager as often as I need to.

It's more like they will argue a bit with each other or other people, which I never really noticed before - maybe because I was too busy directing them to do what I wanted instead of letting them do their own thing.  The dropped interactions may also be because of random pathing issues that have developed over time.  Most of them I have been able to correct as I've discovered them, but there are a few that I just can't get rid of no matter what I do.

As for their traits, they don't really have anything to mention except the founder who is a klepto, gen 4 inventor who is eccentric, and gen 5 doctor who is a workaholic.  Everyone else has the friendly trait and the rest of their traits revolve around their supermax skills and career choices.  No one is insane or childish or neurotic or anything interesting at all really.  I'd hate to imagine a house full of overemotional, dramatic, evil, mean-spirited elders - I think I'd pull the plug on the game at that point, LOL.

When my dynasty got hit with the bug that causes them to suddenly have a child in a foreign country, the family tree got broken and my founder no longer showed up as being related to the rest of the family.  I was concerned that there would be inappropriate interactions between him and his daughter or granddaughter, but fortunately it didn't happen.  They were all far more interested in playing in the sprinkler than in getting flirty.  But also, I'm pretty much a control freak with my sims.  I tend to keep them busy all the time.

First: Sorry for bringing up a dead thread.
Second: Since this was posted in May, which I believe was when Generations first came out, I have an explanation. Since Generations, all elders are more cranky. My elderly dynasty founders in the corrupt (and failed) Bonanza Dynasty weren't cranky, but, as I said, it was corrupt, so that was probably a bug.

I think Seabody is right.  I remember reading before Generations came out that Elders would indeed be more cranky and they wouldn't like children in general.  The exception would be their own grandchildren.
