Bummed that current game stopped working
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:03:12 AM »
I had started a new game after I installed Sims 3 on my new laptop and everything has been going well for about a week. This laptop is actually a big upgrade from the desktop I was playing on.....bigger hard drive, more RAM, better video card etc. It's been running perfectly smooth ever since I started.

Anyway, so my game consisted of a married couple, both with adventurous trait and they were in Egypt. Everything was going fine until the game just suddenly kinda locked up......meaning the clock stopped moving and I couldn't make my sims do anything. I waited and then went to my desktop to see if my computer was doing something.....like a backup or whatever computers do when you don't want them to....and nothing was going on. I waited for a few more minutes to see if it would resolve and it didn't, so I used the ctrl-alt-delete to end the game. I rebooted my computer and then went in a deleted my cache files and anything in backup that may have been causing the slow down and re-started the game. Same thing! Every few minutes, the clock would move for about 2-3 minutes and then stop again. I couldn't do anything. So I quit the game again and re-started the sims but started a new game. The new game works perfectly and there are no issues. But it makes me angry that I can no longer play that family.

Any ideas on what could have happened?  I had not installed any new CC or mods and I hadn't done anything new in the game. I was just playing them in Egypt when it seemed to just lock up. Also, this family wasn't even that "old"...meaning I'd only been playing them for about a week, so I doubt that the game had gotten too big to have bogged down like that.

That's frustrating. The only similar kind of thing that's happened to me has happened with some of my previous guitar players. There just must be too much going on in a given scene while playing for tips in front of the Theatre — so many Sims that the game freezes for up to 30 seconds. I can hear the crowd cheering in the background and the guitar still plays, but the clock does not move. But, the animation has always started again for me.

I even tried to get them to go home, but the game stayed stopped and I waited for a good 20 minutes before I ended the game. I was able to click on the phone and "return home" but then the clock stopped again and the animation never started back up. Oh well, I guess that game is toast.  :'(

Accomplishing that "Return Home" cue really varies doesn't it? I don't know about anyone else, but I've given that cue to some Sims and they literally don't leave the place for another 4 or 5 hours with no other cue in front of it. Other times it seems immediate. So, I wonder what's involved in the load time for that action to process. Or maybe the answer is along the lines of "How many licks does it take to get to the middle of a Tootsie Roll Pop Drop?"

I had exactly the same problem when travelling, but my sims were in France. I eventually had to crash the computer, as there was absolutely nothing I could do - the sims would only move for about 2-3 sim minutes at a time, as you say.
Since then, I haven't had it to that extent, but every now and again it will freeze briefly and I hold my breath waiting for them to start moving again!!

The correct line is "How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?  One, two, three...  *crunch*...  THREE!"

Yeah, but then the voiceover guy repeats the question, and says: "The world may never know." That's the right answer. C'mon. You were there. The owl was a deliberate smoke screen.

A- hem......stay on topic Metro! <smacking hand>   :D :D :D

Well I ended up having another problem today with my new family. <dagnabbit!>  I was busy building the house....actually started building it last night and then today was completing the interiors, when all of sudden, without warning, my game just closed and went to the desktop. Needless to say, I hadn't saved in a little while, so all my hard work was for nothing. I don't know what the problem is because when I updated it the other day and installed the HELS, it was working great. Now just a few days later, it keeps crashing. It has to be because of the newest patch because other than that....nothing else is new in my game.

I hate to say it, but sometimes the game just crashes to the desktop for no reason.  It's just the nature of the beast.  I suggest you get into the habit of saving frequently.  A lot of players save every Sim day, usually when they are sleeping.  Of course, that doesn't help if it crashes in the middle of building a house.

I attest to that, and can't emphasize it enough. I save whenever I think about it...sometimes as often as every five real-life minutes. I always save right after I've done something major, such as add something to the house, or analyze a bunch of relics and then placed them(I have them in a certain order, just like all my gems and stuff...I think I'm borderline OCD with some things, but it ends up looking very nice due my perfectionism...you should see my gem display).

Anyway, I've had the game freeze up, but when it does, I can still see the current Sim's plumbob moving, so I just sit it out. Thus far, it always resumes after less than a minute, possibly a minute, but never much more than that. Ack. It seems unfair, since my computer is way above the minimum requirements. We're talking 3GB of RAM, and an NVidia GeForce 9800GTX+, which, at the time my computer was upgraded, the best I could get(since it's a prebuilt). On the other hand, I read, even here I think, that the game is hardcoded to only use a maximum of 2GB of RAM. Why? It can be a CPU hog, especially when there are Sims everywhere...why would EA do that? It makes no sense. Especially when you think about 64-bit systems, that have crazy amounts of RAM(although, I know nothing about 64-bit systems, so maybe that extra RAM is used for something else?)

BTW, have you tried backing up your saved game to a safe place, uninstalling, deleting all the TS3 folders from the Documents/My Documents folders, then reinstalling? I fixed a major problem with my 'prize' savegame that way.

I usually always do save frequently, but I guess when I'm building and/or decorating a house....I might go a little longer between saves just because I'm not actually playing. I re-did the house tonight and saved after every room that I decorated. I got this laptop a little more than a week ago and installed Sims the same day I got it I think. This one is running Windows 7, has 4gb RAM, Pentium Dual Core processors, and I can't find what kind of video driver it has, but it's definitely better than what I had on the desktop. I got this one mainly for work, but since it's better than my desktop, I've been playing Sims on it too.
