Chuckles, I don't think Medieval has a cheat to add others to your 'family'.  Please see the list of cheats here.  The best work around is to control-click the quest objective to advance the quest and move on.

I am not sure if it is the same thing because it is ages since I did it but ctrl/right click used to let you take control of a sim - such as a child so you could change hair/clothes etc.  Maybe that is where you can add sims to the family.  You would want to make certain that you unselected them when you have done what you need to do because it could mess up your quest.

Figwit is right. I've done it before aswell, though not with quest characters, but with heros, so that I could transfer stuff from their inventory, check their traits etc. I've added npc kids to change their clothes and hair too.
