How do I build a garage separate from house?

my house has  wraparound porch, and I want to add a garage.  A thief stole my sim's teen son car.   Fortunately I had just started the game, so I quit and still have the car.

I don't know how to build a garage and I am suspecting that to keep it from being stolen, my cars will have to be inside a building for an alarm to go off. 

Regardless, I still would like to know how to build a garage.

The garage will  hold three cars.

You build it mostly like any other building, except it doesn't have a foundation.  Place your three parking spots next to each other and then just draw the walls around them.  Put the floor down, choose a roof, and put the garage doors on the front.  They are found in the same place as the regular doors on the Building tab.

I will rebuild one and see how it works, there was one there but I couldn't get the truck in, or either of sims.  So I just tore it down, gave me more room in the yard.  I tried various ways to get the truck in; clicked on it, tried to place the truck in it, tried to get either sim to go in and nothing worked, so I tore it down.

I bought the house beside Agnes, so I have a nice pretty house for my sim family.  I did some remodeling and made it almost perfect for a family of four.  I am going to try and take pictures to show it off.  Of course what I like others may think is awfull, my son says I have no taste in decorating a house    .

I had a car parked in a space next to the house and put a burglar alarm on the outside wall there. It went off when a thief came and tried to get the car.

Janna, if the car is in someone's inventory, you should be able to drag it from the inventory panel to the parking space. If they're driving the car, it should automatically go into the garage when the sim arrives back home. Make sure you have the right size parking spaces inside and a proper garage door on the building - it doesn't even need to face the same way as the parking spaces, it just has to be there.

Have my garage built, and due to the sign in the road I had to make it extra big to hold the two cars, which turned out good as I put the exercise equipment in between the two cars and the teen is thrilled.  I think he likes the exercise equipment more than his new car 

Naturally, I  had to put in a door so I put an alarm beside it, so no thief should be able to steal the cars now.
