Main menu blue screen of death, ATI driver issue

Since noone anywhere else can help me, I figured this would be a great place to ask.

Basically, any ATI drivers newer than 10.4/10.5 cause the Sims 3 to lock my PC up at the menu screen. Strangely enough, I get the exact same problem with Dead Space.

Do any of you know why this might be? I am lucky it works with the 10.4/10.5 drivers, but I would really like to be able to intall the most recent drivers for all of my other games.

PC specs:
Intel Q9550
Asus Xonar D2X
Asus P5Q Deluxe
8Gb Ram
ATI 5970

Any ideas?
