Problems with 'testingcheatsenabled true'?
« on: April 26, 2011, 02:52:59 PM »
Hello!

I always use testingcheatsenabled true as I'm a massive cheat when it comes to juggling my sim family's needs.  :-[ But what I have recently noticed happening is that if I leave it on while I'm playing (which I like to do as I'm constantly shifting things around like relationships with other sims, needs, etc.) then after about an hour or sometimes even less, my laptop shuts down in the middle of my game! And I lose everything I done since last saving. :'( I've heard of weird things happening while leaving the cheat on, but the laptop's a bit messed up anyway, although it only shuts down randomly when connected to the internet, and I don't like running things in the background so I never play TS3 while the laptop's connected to the net. Is it the cheat then, or the laptop? And has anyone else ever had problems with leaving this cheat on?

In simple this cheat can be a game breaker. I use it a lot but I have to admit it does take it's toll. I think the best thing to try is a game without this cheat for a while, see if the same thing happens. You could use Motherlode and get your Sims set up with everything they need to cater their needs well. I jumped straight from Cheatermarathons to a Legacy with No Cheats and Bamn I prefer no cheats now. Well apart from Building Cheats.  :)

I've never had a problem with that. I agree I can't stand having to manage their needs. So I have it on from the main menu until I save and quit. And so far I've had no problems.

I usually leave this cheat on 24/7, and I don't even turn it off when I exit, but it's never been an issue for me.

This might sound silly, but what's the cooling fan on your laptop like? My sister's laptop is less than a year old, but the cooling fan died yesterday and now the computer shuts off after being on for less than 10 minutes. It just can't take the heat. Do you use an external cooling fan when you play? I have one on my laptop all the time, but it especially comes in handy when I'm simming because the game's graphics make my laptop run very hot. Just a thought. (Hey, I rhymed!)

What exactly happens when your laptop shuts down? Is it really hot, or not at all? It's very hard to determine possible causes for your problem without more information. It could be the cheat - but it could also be something entirely different.

I run with on all the time (with a mod to auto enable it), and it hasn't caused me any problems yet.

I don't make to much use of it, but when I want to I'd rather not type it out.

I mostly have this cheat turned on. Believe me, I never had any problems with it. My laptop shuts down occasionally while playing too, but only after it's been on for more than 10 hours. It's the heat.
Well, that's your opinion, isn't it? And I'm not about to waste my time trying to change it. - Lady GaGa

Actually, thinking about it.. It must be the heat. The fan usually does get very, very hot. That must be it. Silly me! Oh. :( It gets hot really quickly for some reason. Like, after half an hour or something. I'll need to get one of them extra fan things. Thanks for the help though, peps! ;D

Regardless of whether or not you actually have problems with it, cheats have been known to cause issues with the game.  "testingcheatsenabled" is the worst offender, as it 'interferes' with the game process on a deeper level than the others.  The game designers themselves have warned about it's use.

However, I wouldn't think that your laptop shutting down would be caused by using it.  That sounds more like a hardware issue related to overheating.  Laptops are prone to heat related issues, and Sims 3 has a tendency to make computers run hot because of this issue.
