I went to play one of my older sim families. I clicked on the relationship tab and noticed that none of them know their relation to one another. This is the first time I've played with them in over a year. Last time was Aug. 2010. I've had this happen to a few of my older families. It doesn't seem to happen very often anymore.

My question is, does this happen to anyone else? Or should I ask has this happened with anyone else's games? If so, what's your thoughts on why this happened/happens?

Weird. My only thought is that maybe it was caused by an expansion pack installation, patching up, or removing mods/custom content. Reinstall too, maybe. Have you done any of the listed in that timespan? Can't think of anything else.

I've had this happen once or twice as well, but it's been a long time since it's happened. Likewise, I have no real idea what causes it.

Yes I have. I made the family on an older computer that we don't have anymore. We've installed Sims 3 on this newer computer, installed expansion and stuff packs, patched it. Oh and moved the saved game files from one hard drive to another, and then some back again. So I think I am seeing where the game files could get uhm.. confused. *Snicker*

My Sims are frequently losing all their WA friends and acquaintances. It seems to be connected to taking a trip to a different location. It sucks, especially when the friends are required for my Immortal Dynasty!

During my Gardening challenge test run, my Sim would lose the acquaintances off the right end of the relationship tab list - little to no relationship and she hadn't talked to them in days. Not sure if it was the games way of "cleaning out" her relationship tab or what.

Probably the case was either the reinstall or neglecting them, as Lily noted.

I was able to get my family to be a family again = know each other as family. I was lucky enough to find their raw sims files. Put them back into Create A Sim and edit their family relationship that way. It starts them over from stratch. But my biggest thing was them knowing each other as family. *Whoot!!*
