How do I serve food from my inventory at a venue?

 Has anyone who plays PS3 or 360 version been able to serve food at a party from their inventory? I know there are a lot of things that are different from the PC version but it definitely seems like a sim should be able to do this! Am I missing something? Any help is appreciated.

In the PC version, this is as simple as removing the food from your inventory and setting it on a surface.

Thank you for responding Hosfac. I know it seems simple to do! I know how to take things out of my inventory and place them, but whenever I pull up my inventory on a lot other than my house, the option to grab certain things turns grey.

Has anyone who plays the console version had this problem as well?
