I looked into a request for Leto. His avatar wasn't displaying in some browsers while many others were fine. I was able to locate dozens of topics out there about IE8 displaying PNG files. So, to prevent this one from becoming a massive headache in the future, I changed the forum's setting such that when a file larger than 65x65 is uploaded, it will automatically scale it down to a JPEG of that size. PNG is better, and clearer but you shouldn't notice much difference. In order to get Leto's pic to work, I had to resize it (I made it 70 pixels wide) and re-upload. When it was uploaded and converted to JPG format, my browser displayed it properly.
I hate having to insitute a fix like this just for one browser type. I hate IE and never touch it. For the record, my IE6 install showed all avatars correctly. When I installed IE8 on my XP machine it destroyed that perfection. There doesn't seem to be any logic to why this PNG or that PNG would not display. It may have to do with transparency layers in the pictures themselves, as how Leto doctored his arm.
