Logic Tutoring Glitch
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:44:10 AM »
I maxed logic, began tutoring adults to get the logic bonus and that worked fine. I had no children, so I started visiting people with them and tutored for ages. I tried teens and in the skill sheet it says "Hours spent tutoring children 0." Tried it on the younger kids and same thing. Bug I guess. Is this common?

I presently don't have a Sim with maxed Logic, so my instructions may not be crystal clear. But, that happened to me as well. What I learned is there are 2 different types of Socials — one is "tutor a Sim in"....and then you get the pie chart of what you can teach, then there's the Social that's only available to grade school kids. That's just called Tutor or maybe Tutor Sim. Anyway, that's the one you want because it's going to impact that stat in your skill journal.

If you tutored the younger sims (teens and children) in a skill, it won't count, like Metro said. You have to go to the Friendly interactions and choose "Tutor".

Logic has two types of tutoring and two skill challenges associated with tutoring. There is "Teacher Extraordinaire" and "Skill Professor".

At level 5 logic you can the ability to tutor child and teen sims to improve their school performance. That type of tutoring helps complete the Teacher Extraordinaire skill challenge. The action for it should be under Friendly and simply be called "Tutor".

At level 10 logic you can tutor other sims (child and up) in the skills you know. This affects the Skill Professor challenge. For this type of tutoring the action should be "Tutor Sim in..." and then you pick which skill.

Huh, that's good news. I'll have to try that. I was always using "Tutor in.." social. Sorta silly that it doesn't also work, but thanks all!

Okay, I tried tutoring the normal way and my guy sat down with his son and the boy pulled out what looked like his homework and they started talking. A blue meter appeared and then they both immediately stood back up. I thought maybe since his homework was done it was that, but the next day I tried it before he had finished it and they both always just stand back up right away. Arg! I'll have to befriend some townie with a kid again and try their kid. Maybe mine is just too awesome to be bothered with tutoring. ;p

Well I guess my kid is just all that. I went over to his best friends home and tutored that kid and it worked fine. Wierd. I had given my kid the multi-tasker lifetime award. Maybe that messes it up.

If the child has an A in school, you can not tutor them.  I guess they already know it all :p

That's a comical way of looking at it lol.  My nephews seem to think they know it all already, too.

Since the whole point behind tutoring is to raise the student's grade level, there isn't much you can do to raise it any higher than max.

If you want to complete that challenge, try to meet a child (teen), get some converstation, then choose "Friendly" -> "Tutor". It's a easy challenge, you only have to spend two day to complete it (2 different child, teen. If one, you have to wait until the child turns to teen, then tutor again). Good luck!

Yes, typically townie children aren't honor students so this would likely work.  Another way to do it would be to keep the children in your active household home from school every now and again.

I had trouble with tutoring children in my first ever dynasty. Pam gave me some great advice. She said to waylay the paper delivery boy/girl and tutor them.

Tutoring a specific subject isn't the same as tutoring children.  You need to tutor them through the friendly menu.  This can only be done in the main land as it's related to their school progress, the option doesn't appear if you're on a trip.  If it's not coming up you may need to befriend them more or it's possible that for some reason they aren't registered at the school, which is why you sometimes meet older townies who are thick gits with only 2 or 3 traits. :P

Any child that exists in a town will be "registered" at the school.  Even the paper boy/girl.  And even if they didn't go to school, it wouldn't have any affect on their traits.  Some pre-generated NPC's only have 3 traits.  Repairmen, firemen (the NPC, not the profession) and I believe pizza delivery people only have 3 traits.  I'm not sure why, but that's the case in every town.  There are also a few townies who are short a trait for some unknown reason.  Lisa Bunch and Kaylynn Langerak are two examples.  This is not to even mention that there's a common bug where you "lose" traits when you age up.  However, I think this only affects your sims, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out otherwise.

If you can't tutor a student, it's because they're already an honor student.

I must have a mod or one of EA's infinite list of bugs interfering with them then, as I'm often finding that some child and teen townies aren't being met in school.  I'll usually find families just stood at their home gates gawping at the scenery and not doing anything else until I focus on them for a few seconds and then they finally go inside.

They do that sometimes.  I'm not sure why, but just because they're standing in front of their house doesn't mean that they're not "at work" or "at school."  Even in careers where the different levels have radically different shifts (the criminal career in particular), you will meet the other sims who work there and increase your relationship with them, even if it's not their work shift.  Other sims can also call them at home during this time, even though the sim who works with them is "talking to them at work."

You won't meet all the children at school because it's much more difficult to do so than it is to meet coworkers.  Likewise, you can have two children in school at the same time, and it's quite possible that they could meet entirely different children without overlapping.
