I use build mode on public lots to add or replenish items. There is no lot that I cannot steal from. At low levels I start with a picturesque vase, at level 5 I go to a princess cordelia bust, then I believe at level 8 of mischief I go to the knight of octagon suit of armor. I do not use cheat codes, but I take advantage of the build option.

I do not buy items for my home. I use the build mode on public lots, during play, to add the items that fulfills my sims needs. I wait to buy items until the rebate day. Plus I buy every item from the flea market to sell.

Sometimes, I get tired of entertaining guests, so I put facilities on public lots, so I can live there for an extended length of time. This allows me to build skills with typically few interruptions. You can put a bed on any lot, and use it. I like to use museums & parks.
