I am considering beginning again, this time using my "minimalist" approach:

This will be built out of the Adore-Adobe (the cheapest starting house.)

"House" consists of two rooms:

Main room is a combined bedroom/kitchen/dining area

Bed

Fridge
One Counter
Sink (I will build Handiness and make it unbreakable)
Table
One Chair

All starting grade

BTW, if I actually need to cook something, I will run across the street to the park and cook it on the grill there.

Bathroom

Toilet (I will build Handiness and make it Unbreakable)
the starting Bathtub (again, Handiness will make it Unbreakable)

Should I get a burglar alarm to protect what little I do have?

You have a chance of the burglar coming even with so little.  Unless you want the realism of the burglar possibly breaking into your house, yes you should buy one.

I have had a burglar rob me on the first night of a legacy, where literally the only non-wall on the lot was the bed my sim was sleeping in. He came in and got annoyed that the only steal-able object was in use, and left in a taxi. So yes, in short, they will come after even the poorest sims! An alarm is definitely worth it.

Thanks.

I will definitely get one; despite it being the most expensive thing on the whole lot!

I'd laugh if the burglar runs to steal the alarm system instead:P
