Laptop that can handle The Sims 4

Hi everyone!

I kind of feel like an idiot for asking this but I want to make sure if I spend the money on a new laptop that it will be able to handle The Sims 4 and whatever expansion packs they come out with. I definitely want a laptop since I travel out of town for work a lot. My budget is around $1,000. A couple that I've been looking at are:

Hi, Fiona. Welcome to the forums.

Any of the three laptops will play The Sims 4 pretty well. The main difference between the three is the graphics card and the amount of memory included.  Here's the main differences summed up:

• ASUS - Best overall video card (GTX 960M with 2 GB), smaller solid state drive (128 GB), no touch screen, weight - 5.3 pounds.
• Lenovo - "Worst" overall video card (GTX 860M with 2 GB), no separate solid state drive, touch screen, weight - 4.9 pounds.
• Acer - Middle video card (GTX 860M with 4 GB), biggest solid state drive (256 GB), no touch screen, weight - 6 pounds.

I put worst in quotes as  it is relatively the worst of the three as it comes with half the memory of the Acer. However, the GTX 960M out performs both 860M chips by a slight margin.

Overall, I think the ASUS is your best bet with the Acer a close second. The Acer is the heaviest of the three (you mentioned you travel), so you'll want to consider that as well. The Lenovo will also play the game just fin and is the lightest of the three, but the ASUS has - in my opinion - the best overall specifications for The Sims 4 and pretty much any other game you throw at it.

For comparison sake, here is what MrsFlynn and I have - MSI GE62 Apache Pro. It has the GTX 960M with 2 GB, 16 GB memory, 256 GB solid state drive and a DVD burner and is about the same weight as the ASUS. It plays The Sims 4 quite nicely on Ultra settings.

Thank you, this helps a lot! But what is the purpose of the solid state drive? How will the game perform with/without a solid state drive?

A solid state drive is much faster than a traditional hard drive, and in many cases is a lot smaller as well. Most systems will use the solid state drive for the Windows system files and certain applications. The remaining applications and user data usually goes on the slower and larger hard drive.

Usually putting your game on SSD will decrease loading time you will have in-game. Since the Sims 4 utilize quite a lot of loading screen, having it installed on SSD is quite nice to have.
