Can We No Longer Play Our Sims Games Without Constant Connection to the Net?

What is going on?  Is this true?

Recently, when I was trying to load and play Sims 3, an Origin screen popped up and said I needed to install the latest version of Origin. I could not find any way to load and play Sims 3 on my PC without first installing this latest version of Origin. So...I installed the latest version, and discovered that, apparently, Origin is no longer going to allow us to disconnect from the Internet and continue playing our Sims games...not even after we have started our games while connected to the Internet. ...Is this true? Is there any way we can disconnect from the Internet and continue playing our Sims games? If not, what are we supposed to do if our Internet service is disrupted through no fault of ours? Why is our starting our games while connected to the Internet no longer good enough to satisfy Origin/EA, as it used to be?

I know of some people who are quite upset that one needs to be logged into Origin in order to play their games. They feel it's unfair after having paid for the product. They are a group of mostly elderly people and very set in their ways. I try to inform them that it's the deal they get, but they can go on complaining forever

The last patch (1.69) is what forces you to connect to Origin. If you don't install the latest patch, but stick w/patch 1.68, then you're fine and only need the disk to play. I don't like having to go through Origin either. Nindigo, it's not a matter of "being set in my ways," it's a matter of not really needing to be connected to Origin just to play a single player game! I don't necessarily want to join others in their style of play and I don't like being forced to. I had enough of that in Sims Online (TSO). I know I can play offline by going offline in Origin, but the last patch is very buggy (as usual).
