Desktop Icons
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:01:39 PM »
I hope this is the right place where I can ask.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10 I've been buggered about the icons in the desktop being automatically re-arranged without my permission. I usually keep my game icons, origin, and sims 4 build/story folders on the right side of the desktop, and the browsers and other serious ones on the left. I like dividing them so that the center of the desktop is uncluttered and I can see the desktop wallpaper. I want my desktop to look like this all the time but I know that once I logout or restart, it will be a mess again.

I thought I could just live with it, but it's been bugging a lot more lately as I frequently save temporary images from prt sc. It's a chaos. Now, I always have to search out the app/icon I need amidst all the chaos.

Does anyone know of a solution for this?

Right-click on desktop and from the popup, click View. Make sure that Auto Arrange Icons is not checked.

If it doesn't help, the only other thing we've been able to find is to tweak settings in the registry.

One other thing you can try that helped me is right click on your desktop, click on Personalize, click Themes, click Desktop Icon Setting and uncheck Allow themes to change desktop icons.

The 'Auto-arrange icon' has been unchecked since before. It didn't do anything it was supposed to. But unchecking the 'Allow themes to change desktop icons' did the job. Awesome! Did a restart and the icons stayed where I place them.

Thanks @grimsoul and @MrsFlynn :D

Oops! I spoke too soon. :(  I was playing Sims 4 and alt+tab later to save a printscreen, and found the icons are re-arranged again.

Sorry to hear that was just a temporary fix for you. :(
Have you tried the registry tweaks Mrs Flynn mentioned yet?

One thing I would suggest is pinning things to the task bar and not having desktop icons.  That's what I've begun to do, but then I'm a bit odd XD
