Really Large Tray Folder
« on: February 02, 2016, 05:54:12 PM »
My tray folder is gigantic, which is completely my own fault! But I was wondering just how much this might have on the games loading times etc?

From what I can tell that will definitely affect loading the game and may cause problems with game performance.

It would be a good idea to backup the households/houses/rooms you don't currently use but may want to keep to an external hard drive or flash drive for safe keeping. Save the whole Tray folder itself, and copy/paste the current files into your current Tray folder.

Or if you're okay with uploading stuff to the gallery do that with some/all of the older tray files.

Oh! Well, I think it's about time I had a clear out then. I haven't deleted anything I have built or any sim I have made since the game launched. Eeek.

Is that only for loading in the beginning? I also notice a bit of delay while starting TheSims4 initially. I know I have plenty of saved lots and multiple copies(with differing names) of ongoing/unfinished building projects.

Earlier in the game, I had already tried managing my tray folder by only liking(hearting?) the lots in the gallery instead of downloading them all. But there is a problem with that when the lot creator decides to suddenly DELETE his works or remove it from the gallery. I now make it a habit to only download the ones that are truly incredible and are works of art (which I would want to peruse at my leisure).

The rest of them, I only 'favorite'. These favorites can be viewed anytime, just go to your Profile in the Gallery and click on catalog. There is a button there to view 'Favorites'.

I also tried saving Tray folder when I moved from the Philippines to New Zealand. Some things I noticed was that my saved 'residential' became 'unknown' in the info window. And one of them even changed the creator name and didn't recognize me as the one who did it. It took quite a lot of work to transfer every room and rebuild the house.

I would advise that you
1. save/upload your own works first in the gallery itself to retain ownership
2. save your tray to an external drive/usb or save on other locations in your computer
before deleting.

EDIT:

@Playalot
I just remembered a trick I do often! I would place the houses on existing plots of land wherever they would fit, save that game, then secure the game file somewhere else with a note describing what is in that game file. This might also work with households. I you want to have them back in your game again, simply load the savedgame and viola! they are there where you left them. :D

I usually have separate game files for starterhouses, castles, asian houses, you get my drift. Many houses in one saved game.

I do get that, that's a good tip and a nice work around. I went on a huge deleting spree and got rid of over half so I'm pretty happy about that. I really only kept the sims and houses I use a lot. Pretty much if it's on the Gallery I deleted it from my library. If somehow I lose it I'm not that bothered really as houses are easy enough to make again. I have to get over the 'keep it whatever' mentality as otherwise my game will explode eventually! lol

I have on separate "electronic arts" folders for building/challenges and for regular playing.

If I want to build I go into the one named "Electronic Arts.Challenges" it's has no Mods/CC in it. I do all my building in there. upload it to the gallery. That is only if I'm building for the fun of it. BUT if I'm in my regular file and I build something for that game and I like it alot. I'll save it to the gallery and then down load it to the "challenges" library and then delete it from the other files library. Confusing when typing it out I know.  ??? :P

That's another really good idea. I have separate save folders for challenges and for testing.
