Asking sim to move in glitch

For some reason, every time I ask a sim to move in to my sim's house and they have a house, I don't get any money from them selling their house, I have everyone moved out but my household gets no money, this is getting to be a pain because I'm thinking of doing a challenge and the only fix I know is to use edit town which is disallowed.
Does anyone know any other fixes to this glitch or what causes the glitch as it didn't used to always happen but now it does.
