Switching from Discs to Origin on Mac
« on: June 22, 2015, 11:29:30 AM »
So I have looked lots of places for the answer to this and I'm just not finding it... but I feel that it must exist somewhere. So if you're sure this has been answered and have a link, that's totally fine! Sorry I couldn't find the answer to this without having to post.

The short story is that I've been playing Sims 3 with a disc since the beginning, I have all the EPs and most of the SPs so I'm currently on Into the Future. I've registered everything through Origin and I can see all of my games in my Library. I'm not sure if this means the digital version was actually downloaded, but all of them have the option to "play." I would particularly like to switch to digital because my laptop doesn't even have a disc drive so I've got to play with an external.

However, when I try to open Into the future in Origin, the launcher opens, I click play, and it asks for the disc. Incidentally if I try to log in with my e-mail in the launcher at that point, it crashes entirely, but I don't know if that's related or not.

I suspect I need to uninstall what is currently installed, i.e. the disc version of the game, but I'm hesitant to do so without confirmation just because a fresh re-install takes so long. If that's what I need to do, though, I'll do it.

Are there any other special steps I'd have to take? Will I have to completely reinstall my store content, and should it be able to do so from the store menu like usual? I've saved my Sims 3 folder for the saved games and whatever else I need to grab, so I'm ready... just don't want to do the wrong thing.

Thanks in advance.

Hi ZacSz,

Before you try a uninstall/reinstall, try just uninstalling the disc version of Into the Future, and then installing it via Origin to see if that might help?

I wanted to mention, I'm not a Mac user. But do have a list of links for Mac users. :)

I'm not sure this will work, but thought I'd mention it just in case. - This is how we've backed up our store content.

I hope this helps, :)

I'm going to start by just uninstalling the disc version of Into the Future, that's a great idea thanks! If that doesn't work I'll go through the links and see what I can find... thank you very much :) I'll update when I can.

Edit: That seemed to do it, thank you!! I still need to double check and make sure all of my EPs and store purchases remained in game, but it seems like they did (all my saves, too!) and I am able to run without a disc.

I am happy to hear that worked!! Would you be willing to try something for me? Since you were mentioning backing up your store content. Would you see if doing something similar to what's described in the link below works for backing up your store content?
