I had this dream last night that I accidentally left my Sims game running all night. When I checked it, the whole household was very angry, and my husband and wife's relationship had become "enemies" because he decided there were too many irresistible sims in hype neighbourhood.
So it got me to thinking. We pretty much control every aspect of their life....from traits to who they marry, how many kids to have, where they live, their careers etc. Imagine if free will and story progression were more advanced, what do you think your sims would actually do with their life? Would your ambitious sim have a mid-life crisis and actually become a lazy slob? Do you think one of your sims would decide they made a bad choice with their spouse, and get divorced?

In my current game I'm controlling only one sim in a family, so I can tell you that they wouldn't get very far in their careers, assuming they even got a job to begin with. If I wasn't controlling anyone, the plumbing would all break down and not get fixed, and the refrigerator would break, as would the computer, TV, and radio. They wouldn't have any children, but if there was a baby before I ceased controlling them, the baby would be looked after -- eventually. I wouldn't expect much relationship drama, though.

They'd get themselves to work and school, although they might be late since they often need a Watcher-nudge to leave a group conversation to get going.  They'd also gain a ton of weight from how they eat, and from getting juice and milk from the fridge while socializing, especially since there are some lazy sims in the house who hate exercising as well.  Their house would be a mess because the toilet breaks every five minutes, and nobody in the house is terribly motivated to clean except for the teenager.  Instead, they'd spend their free time either watching TV or playing games on the computer, with the occasional break to play with the moldable clay.  :D

Hopefully they wouldn't set fire to the house and kill themselves by trying to cook with low needs, but since the kitchen/living room has a bulletin board full of inspiration boosting postcards on it that would encourage them to cook, and a table they love to socialize at while listening to music, watching TV, and snacking, I'm not too optimistic.

Summer Holiday would probably get caught up in the disaster zone, since she visits 1-2 times a day due to being best friends with one of my sims. As a bonus, though, she does take out the trash if no one has gotten around to it.

In my household at the moment are two neat sims that just live to clean, so they would be mopping themselves to death probably as the never ending flow of water from broken appliances would just be too irresistible. Then I also have two mixologists who would do nothing else but make themselves drinks all day, enough said. And then of course there's the (for some reason) irresistible easels in the study that my sims are drawn to like a moth to a flame. This would be a problem for my artist sim, who because the easels would be filled with art, wouldn't be able to paint and so would become gloomy so then he would go and 'play' the piano so horribly that everyone else would become tense... and then they would all fight... Yeah, I don't think they would do so well without my tender guidance.  ;)

I meant more like if they autonomously chose careers and hobbies and relationships etc, not what would happen if we just observed them on free will.
I think my female sim would be more of a fitness fanatic than I let her be. I think her husband would be a bit of a player, but keep it secret. I think deep down she'd realise they weren't meant to be together and she'd initiate an amicable divorce. My children sim adore their mum, but don't have a high relationship with their father. I think my female sim would remarry and the sim children would have a better relationship with their step-father. I think my sim children would become quite different as teens. My naturally smart sim would realise his academic qualities and become more serious about school and his future. My "academic" sim that struggles with school, would finally just give up and become lazy and choose a criminal career.

The household I'm currently playing has two Sims who adore each other. Literally every time I'm not micro-managing their activities they go socialize with each other, so I don't think they'd have any relationship issues, and maybe they'd have a child or two. As for careers, the girl would advance a lot in her career, she's got a lot of skill points in writing and is Ambitious, not sure about the guy though... He doesn't seem too enthusiastic about work. Also, they would probably gain a lot of weight because neither one of them is Athletic or anything, and the guy is a chef so they eat gourmet food quite a bit.

I don't know how they would act if freewill and story progression were more advanced, but I can tell you what my simmies would do if I left them alone for an extended period of time with the game as it is now.  They would never, ever, ever advance in their careers, and they would all get fat.  Then all the toilets would break and they would slowly die off from embarrassment by peeing themselves too much.

Based on what neighbors visiting me are doing, they'd probably enter the observatory and stayed inside until they'd die from starvation or until I'd interfere.

I accidentally left my sims game open and on speed 3 for two days... 2 of my sims died because of a fire (yay fireplaces... not). the third was ok, but everything in the house was broken, there were puddles everywhere and the sim was very uncomfortable. Thank god for exiting without saving. Ugh. I'm closing my game when I quit from now on.

Based on what they do every time I am not watching them, they would play video games all day. Nothing productive.    Gee, now that I think about it I am more like my sims than I'd like to admit!

For me it depends on which family i'm playing.

The Grande family, would be fitness fanatics and the kids would drop out of school and join the circus.

The Rubio's, would keep having kids, the mother would be a stay at home mum and the father would become a multi-billionaire who fools around with his female staff (he's a ladies man).

My Legacy family the Burnetts, Lori would reach the top of every career, discover the secret to living forever, well until she maxs every skill and every career, she'd enjoy the benefits of watching her husband Travis go through pregnancy, Travis would be the stay at home parent and play video games while neglecting the kids and hoping labor doesn't hurt as much as the last time.

Hmmm... Well, I'm playing my first generation a dynasty attempt. My founder moved in the BFF household. I think she would cook like crazy, garden occasionally and learn an instrument, but most of all, she would drop her admittedly forced relationship with Travis Scott. They just aren't that into each other. Travis himself would do nothing but play video games and probably start a relationship with Liberty Lee, wherein they'd geek out together adorably. Summer Holiday would be a party girl, socializing non-stop.
