I find it really strange that achievements appear to be unlocked on a game by game basis.  Every time you start a new game you end up with a blank slate of achievements...

Maybe the new game function is more orientated towards multiple people playing on the same PC? Maybe they expect a single player to play all their characters within the one world? After all you can start as many characters as you like...

There is a (nerdy) part of me that would really love to complete all the achievements in the same game. Does anyone else have any thoughts or views on the achievement system?

You're right!  I don't like it.  I was planning on playing each household in a different world, and I don't want to have to get all of the achievements with a single household.  I would have liked player profiles within the game instead to keep achievements separate.

Well, I'll play devil's advocate here and say I love that it works this way because the Tournament Coordinator in me is thinking that an Achievement Challenge next year is a no brainer and will be fun. Challenges have to be as fair as possible for everyone and if achievements were not wiped clean then you'd have some players who have been playing the game since day 1 and have racked up lots of achievements already competing against other players who have just purchased the game.

But, I get what you're saying, Fysh. It's going to be tough to get a ton of achievements in a single game unless you're looking at a longer Dynasty/Legacy kind of game.

Creating a new profile for the challenge would have solved that issue, though.  I hope they add profiles in a later patch, and allow achievements to be shared within one.

I like the achievement system better this way too.  In TS3 I almost created a separate account just so I could try and get all the achievements with one household.

I quite like it to. Makes starting a new game just that, new. It's also quite interesting that certain things that seemed too hard when I first bought the game are a walk in the park now!

I would've liked it more if the achievements would be 'global', so they're on your account. But what metropolis man said sounded interesting. The idea of an achievement challenge. That I like.
But I don't bother to get the achievements right now, because I have 3 seperate game files that I play with and I don't wanna start over all the time. Also I feel that some achievements don't unlock properly. For example: I was playing with my legacy challenge file (which I've been playing for over 40 hours or so?) and I just got the achievement that I played for 5 hours. I almost have 100 hours in the sims in total. So that's pretty weird in my opinion.
Normally I enjoy achievements a lot in game, but I tend to do nothing with it this way.

Did you recently update your game?  The play different number of hours achievements were patched in.  There are definitely some achievements that don't work right, but this one should be working.

I did update my game recently. I let origin update my games automaticly and I believe there's been a recent small update.
