Strange Time Glitches?

When I travel with just one of my sims time is continuous while he travels and in the lot he goes to. When I get home the other sim is exactly in the same position she was before we travelled and none of her needs have changed.
Often, but not always time jumps to evening or early morning when he gets home even though thats not the time it was when he left the lot he was visiting.
Is this normal? I thought that time was just supposed to continue regardless of where your sims are.

By checking with another new game I've figured this is a glitch as in my other game time runs continuously.
In my time-glitchy game the sims often reset themselves by all instantaneously stopping an action and the sims end up standing outside by the kerb, or in the middle of the room.
