NPC Stole My Pet Bird - any way to retrieve it?

My sim's new roommate started playing with her minor pet (a falcon). When they finished the action, they put the bird in their inventory, and have yet to return it to the bird tree it was on. Bit rude of them to just casually steal my pet like that. Is there any way for me to retrieve the bird from their inventory, short of moving them in as a playable character? (I don't have any mods).

I don't think so. Sometimes a townie or NPC will just put an object of yours in their inventory and abscond with it. Maybe they are kleptos? I have lost books and guitars this way, but never a pet I think.  Best chance to get it back would be to move them in then kick them out again once you got your bird back.
