Sims disappear when travelling?

Apologies if there is already a thread for this, but I couldn't find anything.
When I sent my sim to the Future, the world loaded, but her sim panel wasn't on the left of screen, nor was her portrait or any of her information along he bottom. Time was still passing and I could change the speed and pause. I have no mods or CC. Does anyone know why this occurred?

This also happened to me. The sim panel disappeared, the buy and build mode become unusable, the simology can't be expanded, and I can't click anything except moving pointer around the neighborhood.
In case if this happened again, what should I do?

It sounds like the old travel bug.  Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to fix it once it's happened.  Prevention has been the only real cure and you should be sure to save before traveling so you can go back and try again.
