Home world won't load after going to university

Hello everybody. I hope I'm not bothering anyone by posting here, I've noticed this is a nice community and I was hoping I could get some opinions on what is causing my issues with the game.
I have a problem that is similar to the one describe here: http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,19097.0.html . However it is a bit more complexe.

I had 3 sims go to university before, for 3 completed terms in total, and it worked just fine. They even dropped out at some point and returned to university and still it worked fine.
Time passed, they had children, and once the first girl reached adulthood I sent her to university. So because she had good grades she only needed one term (one visit) to university to graduate. It went well, she graduated just fine but... I can't load the home world anymore. It loads to about 90% and then the loading screen hangs on indefinitely, although the mini game still works. The music stops at some point and it's like the game is running in the background - I can hear the rain, the thunder, the fulfilled wish song, the phone ringing, stuff like that. But the game itself never loads.
I have two save files of this family - one just a few hours before the graduation ceremony and one a few days before the final exam. I tried to send my sim home (by letting her graduate or dropping out) from both save files but same thing happens. Doesn't load.
I tried this with mods, no mods, with CC, no CC, (deleting cache files every time in case there was some corrupted file in there) - there doesn't seem to be a difference.
I am at a loss. My knowledge of fixing glitches ends here. Is it that my entire game is corrupted somehow? Do I have to reinstall?

I have all EPs (no stuff packs), updated to last patch (1.67 I believe). If you need any other info, I will post it here ASAP. I would really like my sim family back, if possible.

Hi Ileana,

I was reading up on this error the other evening,  a suggestion that has caught my eye is a factory reset. Have you tried that? 

Factory reset - Rename your current Sims 3 folder to something like Sims 3 Current. Click the Sims 3 icon to create a new Sims 3 folder. Then copy your game saves, files and such over to the new game to see if that helps. (This is different from a total-game reinstall)

Hello! Thank you very much for your responses. Sorry I took so long to answer myself, I haven't been able to get ahold of the computer for some time (exams and so on).

So, back on topic. I have looked over the links and read the info, but they don't help much. Today I tried the factory reset solution. However it does not work. After graduation, my sim gets in the moving truck, the loading screen shows up and then it just stays there indefinitely.

I guess the save game is much too corrupted and I won't be able to do anything about it.
