Save Game Frozen
« on: August 05, 2013, 11:33:18 PM »
Hi all,
I have problem that I'm not even sure how to start to tackle.

My game and save loads fine, but once it's loaded it's frozen.

I can move the mouse around.
Sometimes the cursor will change to the appropriate icon when hovering over certain things, if I wait enough time (several mins).
Once I was able to unpause and zoom out to the town, where I could see the birds flying over the map. This took maybe 30mins.

These lead me to think that the game is running, but VERY slowly. And eventually grinds to a halt where nothing will work.

The last thing I did before I saved was detonate a car and collect some of the scrap that it produced.
The last save was done during the massive slow downs.

I've tried clearing cache, disabling mods. If I create a new save the game works fine.

Running the latest patch on windows.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to our Forum!

If this is an old and/or large save file, it could be just that it's too large for the game to run properly.  I've had similar things happen with multi-generational files.  Another thing you can do is look at the file itself and see if it's bad.  To do this, you go to Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Saves.  If there's a copy of your file with ".bad" in the file name, then it's a corrupted file.  In this case, you would need to delete any save that has ".bad" in the name and maybe even try restoring the ".backup" file.

Hi Pam, thanks for the reply.

It's a new save (made on the weekend) and only 50MB. (I assume that's small, but really I have no idea.)
There's no *.bad file(s) either.

Since my original post I've restored a backup but that was no help. I think I must have saved twice when the slow down first happened. I do recall not fully paying attention because everything was taking so long.

At this point I consider this save to be lost and I'm more interested in prevention and understanding.

It's difficult to know if something like this can be prevented.  Of course, running mods in your game always carries some risk and even though you disabled them, it's slightly possible they caused the problem.  Other than that, I can't see that you did anything "wrong" to make your file go bad like that.  It's a good thing you only just started that game so you won't be losing a lot.  I came close to losing a five generation Dynasty file a few days ago and many others haven't been nearly as lucky as I was in recovering the file.  One last thing...  have you done a "Save As" and given the file a new name and check to see if that new file will load better?

I hadn't done a Save As. That seem to have worked a tiny bit, or maybe I was just lucky. The game managed to run for maybe a min before freezing again. However, I wasn't in the room to see. (Opps!)

Either way, I now have an ErrorTrap log to go over now.
