What happens to Sims 3 when Sims 4 comes out?

As I'm new to the world of Sims, I was just wondering.

When Sims 4 comes out what happens to Sims 3? I know I asked before what it was & someone advised that it was a whole new game. But does that mean that when 4 is out that they stop making expansion packs & stuff packs for 3?

I've not had any of the other Sims games in the past to compare or to know.

When Sims 3 came out, they stopped making new EPs for Sims 2, so I'm assuming it will be the same this time.  But Sims 3 will continue to be available, and certainly people can continue playing it as long as they like.  Nobody will have to give up their Sims 3 if they don't want to!

Also, this forum will continue to offer support for Sims 3, and we will also be opening a new Sims 4 section to the forum.

Sims 4 is actually off topic for this forum and there is already a thread where all conversations will continue in the future.  Since the question was answered by Schipperke, I am locking this thread.
