Matching houses to towns
« on: June 08, 2013, 09:30:38 PM »
Here's a bit of a random question, and I understand entirely if this isn't a fitting spot for it. But it's been bugging me, so I'd like to ask:

Does it bother anybody else to build a house that doesn't match the "feel" of a town?

Case in point: I've been wanting to build a house in a Pueblo style for... quite some time. However, I don't have any towns that it would 'blend' in with; placing one in, say, Sunset Valley would feel the same, to me, as placing a building of metal and glass in the middle of downtown Hidden Springs: completely out of place. It shouldn't bother me as much as it does; really, I play the game only to build houses, and it's not like the Sims would really care that their house is out of place. Perhaps it's living in a small town (less than 2000 people) that makes me feel this way. All of the houses here are, if not the same architectural style, than at least similar: Bungalow, Prairie, Craftsman and Farmhouses. A Pueblo house would look garishly out of place here.

Does it bother anybody else? How do you get around it?

It doesn't bother me, I take pleasure in the Juxtaposition of styles. I'd gladly drop a Modern glass and steel construct in Hidden Springs, build a futuristic citadel in moonlight falls, a medieval fortress in Sunlit tides. Do you have Lucky Palms? It's supposed to be Vegas, so maybe a pueblo house there?

Normally, this doesn't bother me too much. I sometimes try to build the same style house if it's of medium size. I generally don't pay too much attention if I'm building on low budget or a huge mansion. However, I have to build a futuristic house if I play in Lunar Lakes. I do feel that it's very out of place to have anything else. I just look at the other houses and take note of their wallpaper and windows. The inside sometimes looks like a normal house, but I at least need the outside to fit in.

I feel the same way about homes not fitting in. What I usually do is make a small community of houses that match with it (when in Sunset Valley I use the lots above the Langeraks house). Doing this just makes it feel less out of place to me.

I am obsessive with this, to the point that I have tried to create my own worlds to match the style of the houses I want to build. I'm not the most patient person though and I always give up before I finish them... or my game messes up even before that  ::). I'm not very interested in Lunar Lakes itself but I'm considering to buy it because I like modern houses and always find they look odd in the other towns.

It can bother me sometimes, and like Gulliver the cat! what I do then is to try to group houses together that have a similar feel/color scheme to them.

I find many different architectural styles can go together quite well if they have some kind of common thread, and color can really tie a street together. I'm not talking about every house having the same exact colors but a group of colors such as them all being a muted grey/blue/green or warm light brown/yellow and orange.

I have also found that using the same/just two different roof colors can make things feel less messy from map view.

It drives me nuts when they don't fit the "theme" of the town.  Sometimes you can squeak by doing what Gulliver the Cat does.  Sunset Valley is a good place for this as there is that long road, Pinochle Point?, that is sort of away from anything.  You can even shift the lots a bit to put in sizes you want there.  However, for the most part I want the houses to fit the theme.

I also have a hard time with "sameness" though.  Lucky Palms is boring to me because all the houses pretty much look alike except for that small, depressed area.  With the feel of the town there isn't much you can do except build still another box house.  A pueblo style would fit right in there though.

Then you get a world like Dragon Valley.  Most of the architecture is just fine and they did a great job with the rabbit holes in particular.  However, there are somethings that just don't fit.  A fire department, for instance, should fit, but boy is that a hard one to build to make work there!  Sometimes though all you have to do is change the roof and exterior and your problem is solved.

This thread really struck a cord with me ! I was really hoping for some fairytale cottages and whitch'y towers in Moonlight Falls, but the houses are so modern  >:(     (not that I can boast about my building skills ! :o )
I'm just so thankful we have some brilliant builders on the fourm who are willing to share ;D

I'm never really bothered about matching themes in my towns primarily for building (Usually Riverview) but I do prefer houses to fit in. In real life, I get really agitated and angry if I see a super modern, black and white house in the middle of a street of pretty, traditional homes.

I enjoy the mismatched look of towns. I remind me of the city I call home. (It's pretty mismatched, with some parts being over 100 years old, and others brand spanky new.)
