No, the Grim didn't come and take him.  He continued to be fully playable.  The only hint that he was dead was looking at his "family tree" in which he now appeared grayed out.  But as far as I can figure, he was "dead."  He died 8 days into the vacation.  8 days after getting home, the Grim came to get him.

That's a very strange occurrence.  I'd have to say it's probably a glitch of some sort in your game.  I don't think it's something that normally happens.

I'm pretty sure my sim "died" of old age on vacation.  It's a very awkward situation now.  Since sims don't seem to actually be able to die on vacation, some interesting things happened:
1. ALL family relationships were reset to 0
2. The sim who died was removed from the family tree (and now has a crush on his daughter)
3. The sim who died appeared gray when looking at his family tree (of one...*sigh*) while on vacation, which is how I decided that he had died.

Now that the family is back home from vacation, the old man's color in his family tree is back.  He still has a crush on his daughter who he doesn't recognize as his daughter.  And we're re-building the relationships.  I'm expecting the old man to actually die any day now, but maybe he won't since he already died once.

I run a clean game, and WA is my only EP.  (I admit that I did use a cheat to improve the family relationships.)  So weird.

I've seen that bug before, in my second attempt at the Immortal Dynasty.  My Sim apeared to have died of old age, exactly like yours, although he'd only just had his adult birthday.  Once he returned home he was 'alive' again, although the broken family tree remained.  He went on to become immortal but the game glitched terminally a few weeks afterwards.

In my old dynasty, I sent Christopher and the rest of the family (who was existant and alive,) to China. Christopher lost all of his relationships and was removed from the family tree, and she gained a crush on the granddaughter, Neptuna. This happened 10 days into vacation, and 10 days after her returned home he died. Travel bug alert!!
Pretty much same scenario as below:

Happens also when travelling to the Future. Two of my elder sims, Natalie and Colin, a married couple, died there on the same day. Their children only show as children of Natalie and all their grandchildren disappeared from the family tree. They still show as children to their mothers and fathers in the relationship panel. After that, the family tree turned completely unusable, doesn't even open. I would like to at least see it.

Also, the gravestones of Natalie and Colin disappear if I try to return them in the past. Any fix to that?
