I have literally scoured this map Moonlight Bay (at least I hope that's the right name) for the last 8 or 9 hours, I've gotten all the rocks, gems, and metals.
I have found 50+ of almost every insect (even the rarest ones).
The only ones I can't find are:
Royal Purple butterfly
Zebra butterfly
And the Trilobite beetle
I for the past 5 hours have been using both a werewolf hunting and someone with a collection helper to try to find these bugs with no luck.
I play the PC version using Supernatural expansion.
I would have posted this on the actual EA Games sims forums but I lost my cd key and can't even post on their website as a result (what's going on EA)
Anyone know of any guaranteed spots for them to spawn at some point?

Welcome to the forum.

I believe you're talking about Moonlight Falls.  Moonlight Bay is the name of one of the console towns.

Do you have an alchemist?  Have you completed the alchemic mastery chain?  If you haven't completed the chain or leveled an alchemist, I recommend leveling someone to do it and then when you get the chain, don't do any of the actions.   It will show map tags with names of every insect in town and when they appear.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that someone told me that Trilobites only ever come out on Mondays & Tuesdays.    Depending on what you've added to your town at one point or another, I know for a fact I've gotten the purple ones behind City Hall and over by the water tower.  Remember insect spawners don't just spawn one kind, they share spawners so you have to pick everything up to get something new.

I don't think I've ever seen any zebras or the location of a trilobite to be honest.  It's been a long time since I was in that town.

If you're talking about Moonlight Falls, I have found both the purple butterfly and the zebra one near the Alchemy shop.  But they don't turn up very often.  I've never really looked for insects anyplace else, so I don't know about the trilobite beetle.

Yes i am talking about Moonlight Falls, Moonlight Bay is on the Xbox i believe(I own both, easy to confuse the two).
I have not seen the Royal yet but the diversity of the butterflies around the map is much higher after collecting insects from certain spots.
I've seen the Zebra one time in the grassy area near La Shove Beach and the Gym but my sim failed to catch it and I haven't seen it again yet.
Have not seen the beetle yet

Will the Pets expansion pack affect any of my progress?

No, the S3 Pets will not affect your game and will not add new butterflies or bugs.

Sims 3 pets will spawn minor pets instead of insects sometimes from my understanding.  Just like for gems/metals, it will spawn a dig spot instead. 

Also Wildflowers can spawn instead of seeds and insects too I think if you have Seasons.

If you can travel, go to France.  You'll find pretty much every butterfly you ever wanted there in the tomb my the frog pond.

You can also go to the Swap Shop and download lots created by forum members.  I have created some gardens that focus on specific aspects, a nectar and a chef's garden are a couple.  I put in spawners for look and I know that one spawner has the purple, green swallowtail and the red butterfly, not sure about the zebra.  As for the insects, I put out spawners for the rhino and the stag, or else the spotted, can't remember which ones.
Others have also created gardens that have spawners, if you don't mind using them.  I don't know if you would see that as a form of cheating.  I put in the butterfly and insect spawners for looks manily but they have come in handy when I am working on my elixers and can't find the insects I need elsewhere. 

Others have also created gardens, Mrs. Flynn along with some others has created a couple of really nice gardens.  Like I have, they are mainly for enjoyment, a place for sims to meet but also to collect some fruits, veggies and other items sims can need. 

I hope it is okay to mention about the gardens in the Swap shop, if not, please let me know and I will delete this or the mods can delete it.
