Mining in Sunset Valley

Can you do anything with the mine in Sunset Valley? I always click on it and there is no options. I hear people talking about getting gems, metals ect. from mining and I don't get it. I tried searching but didn't find my answer so sorry if this has been answered before.

Metals spawn outside the mine, but people talking about mining are probably talking about using the 'miner' invention - which you can use pretty much anywhere not just at the mine.
