Building your own rentable house?

How do you set up houses to be rented? Can houses in the home town be rented? What does the new 'apartment' designation do on residential lots?

The lot is rented if you mark it as apartment.

Apartment lots will automatically be given roommates and I'm not sure it matters how many beds you put in there.  They will just give you roommates up until the point your household reaches 8 which means with roommates you can't add to the family.   And someone was saying even if you dismiss the roommates, another one will come to fill the spot.

You should be able to use your phone > Property and travel > Roommate options > Set the number/gender to what you want...

I made a duplex using the late night lot markers, and setting the second house with an NPC door. Your sim won't rent it in their home world though - they'll still buy it.

Can you rent out rooms in already existing houses? For example, i'm playing a family in Monte Vista who have a spare bedroom and I was considering getting them to rent out their room as a way of getting in some extra cash?
