How do you start learning the science skill?

You can take a class at the Science building in your hometown.
You can purchase the book from the bookstore.
You can go to the hometown library and read the skill book there.
At University, you can take a class at the School of Science or buy a book from the bookstore.
Also at University you can mess around with the group science project which is the giant machine between the art building and the science building.  Eventually you will learn the skill.

Last but not least - buy the research machine from buy mode and start researching on it.

Does any one know if they added the Science skill to the Scientist career.  And if they didn't, does it have any other effects outside of the university.

The Science skill lets you start at the Science and Medical careers at level 2 without needing a degree. This does not stack with actually getting a degree in Science/Medicine.

I suppose I could have started a new thread for this, but since this is already here:

Is it just me, or does the Science and Technology skill take an exorbitantly long time to learn? I use mods, and I know that many people here do not, so I'm trying to figure out whether it is a mod problem or a game problem.

For some reason, I found it to be quite the opposite.  I had one of my pre-existing sims learn the skill, and she did it at a way faster speed than I expected.  I had her reading the book in the library, so there was that, but even still, it was disturbingly quick.  Pretty sure she didn't have any special traits or LTRs that would make her better at learning it either.

There is a bug with the latest patch that will have Sims skilling extra quick.

OH that's what it is. My child nearly has six inventing skill and she's only made two things. She has Eccentric and Genius, but still! Oh, and her mother maxed handiness while upgrading things - I'd finish upgrading something and would have gotten one or two levels in handiness from it. I'm so glad I'm not going crazy. :P
