Newbie Question - Are sims bios just teasers?

hi, um, i've only just started playing sims 3 a few weeks ago and no matter how much reading i've done, I still just don't seem to get it....  so please, if someone could explain to me how the premade sims stories work, i'd really appreciate it.  I mean not 'work' i understand they get go to work, get married and stuff on their own but...  the stories hinted at in their bios, are those just teasers, ideas for you to play out?  or is there something actually to them?  For example, in Hidden Springs, one of the families has parents that have gone missing and somewhere it says to go look in the woods??  so has something actually happened to them prior to the game starting or if my sim goes looking for them would it be like looking for the fountain of youth spring that wasn't actually there either...  another thing i'm not quite sure i understand... thank you in advance.

Bios are to get a feel for thier personalty, and their back story. Other then that, I find them kinda useless. Everyone here tries to put the pieces together and we all do it in differnt ways.
For exspamle, here my idea of what happened to the Alvi family:

Iqbal Alvi's bio: The father of two boys, Iqbal’s wife left unexpectantly one day, leaving him to raise his sons alone. He wants only the best for them, but one son is a rebel who tests his patience. Can he raise his sons and find love again?
VJ Alvi's bio: VJ is a troubled teen. He blames his dad for his mom leaving. He doesn’t have any aspirations in life and is a horrible student. He spends his time inventing new ways to torment his father.
And then Miral Alvi: Miraj has aspirations in life, unlike his brother. He gets along well with both his brother and his father and is the mediator in the family. He wants a career someday in law enforcement.

With this and their traits, I'm guessing that their mother left when Miraj was a toddler or baby. VJ was a child, and perhapes he didn't understand what really happened, and so blamed his father. Iqbal can't explain what truly happened to VJ, so they resort to arguing. Miral doesn't care, but growing up to this life he finds it tiring but he's really good at it, and sees that the police are good at it too.
Other helpful hints are: Look at the house, car, relationships and other bios too.
