Agreed, makeup colors make a huge difference! It's also a good idea with makeup to not try to match the eye color to the eyeshadow or eyeliner.  A different but complementary shade tends to highlight the eyes' natural color more, and that's really important, especially if you have a sim with small or squished up eyes.  Oh, and the opacity sliders are also important.  They almost always look fake and caked on at max, so test at sliding them down and see where it looks best.

Also, if you extend the eyelashes (not sure if it's only available in CAS or directly from the mirror) sometimes that can really help a sim.  I don't consider it body editing as much as using one of those "volumizing" mascaras. ;)

My favourite Sim I created was Moven:

Just something about the colouring, the rounded face, the mouth and eyes and small nose that gave her a kind of "sad beauty" look, though if I played her again I think I'd add a bit of weight to her body as well to accentuate the curves more. I'm one of those who messes with the sliders too though often I'll click the presets first for a baseline that's similar to what I want and then go from there. And I always pull the muscle slider up on girls, the one that starts at 0. And as you can tell I like experimenting with the different hair colouring zones - having different highlights or base or tips so it's not all just a flat colour. Usually I have the colours more similar than Moven has, but I like some variation.

I like her larger lips, actually. I'm not usually a fan of big lips (I'm definitely a Christopher Steel mouth girl!) but I'm actually warming to them.

...(I'm definitely a Christopher Steel mouth girl!)...

Haha!  You should go look at the new Dreamweavers I uploaded to the Swap Shop.  There are some serious Christopher lips going on in their family.  The mother is Taffy Dreamweaver, who is Christopher's daughter in my Townie DecaDynasty.  I took her from my bin and put her with her husband to make them the start of my Baby Boomer IV challenge.  Taffy has Christopher's lips, so probably half their kids have them, too.  And there are 14 kids!  Look for links to First Dreamweaver through Ninth Dreamweaver.  That's all I have uploaded so far.  The examples I used a little ways up this thread to show warm and cool makeup colors both come from this family and both have Christopher lips!  ;D

This is Gabriel Vincent from my Love or Money game. I knew I wanted swarthy good looks for him so I started off with tanned skin. Next, came his face. I did quite of bit of work with the sliders attempting to give him chiseled features. Cheekbones make quite a change. Without them, he was a pretty rather than handsome. Eyes are also important. Size and color change the whole look of a sim. My best advice is adjust the sliders until you get what you want and the undo button is your friend. I used it many times before Gabriel arrived at his final look.
