Major Game Issue: Crashing
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:40:00 PM »
I've always been a huge fan of the Sims, but recently I had stopped playing for a few months to work on things for school and when I went back to install Monte Vista this past Saturday, that I had seen at Best Buy and I decided that it would be a good time to start playing again.
I had tried to play the game Friday, but I could only play for about 15 minutes before, without warning, the screen went black and my laptop was of. No "Windows is Shutting Down" or anything just black. I tried deleting custom content to start with, all Mods and Downloads, the whole folders and that only made it worse, and it blacked out right as the very first loading screen was finishing.

Next, I tried re-installing all of the games, I went to the Control Panel and uninstalled all of the games, and also checking for registry codes and/or folders that may have not properly uninstalled, but it was completely clear. I then did a Disk Cleanup, followed by a Defrag of the C: Drive.
I then decided to test the waters by installing only the base game. I installed it and it alerted me of the 1.48 patch and I downloaded it, but at about 22% I attempted to pause it, only to have it lock up. I then tried to restart it from the launcher, but it wouldn't come up, it only closed the launcher and did nothing. I went to manually install it and it showed an error, message. I'm afraid I forgot what it said, I was too hacked off to even read it. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the game once again and the same thing happened when I downloaded it from the launcher.
I then decided to just try and play without it. I thought it was working until I reached Create-A-Sim. Once I had selected hair for my Sim, it crashed once again. And so here I am!
Any help or anything vital I may have missed?

And by the way, I have had no trouble running Sims on my laptop in the past, except for a small glitch in the Sim Clock where it would stick and jump several minutes.\

Additional Note: When I skip the opening sequence by pressing Enter, it seem to crash sooner. Please help!

Update: Since installing the SuperPatch for Patch 1.50, I tried skipping the startup screen and it didn't crash and I selected a premade family and the game only crashed when I attempted to makeover one of the Sims and the game crashed.

Update Again: As I was writing this post, my computer crashed again. Sims was not open in the background or anything.

Are there "xcpt" files generated in your Sims 3 directory? You might be able to get an idea of what the problem is with the Sims 3 Crash Log Analyzer. (Not sure if linking to it is appropriate - but you can find it easily through google).

By Sims File directory do you mean just the Sims 3 folder in under Electronic Arts in Documents?

Yes.   That's where they generally will be every time the game crashes.   If it's the computer and not the game, you won't get any.  Meaning it was the computer that did the weird action and not the game itself that did it to crash.

There are no .xcpt files, but there is a file called "travelDB" and I assume that has something to do with WA, but I don't have WA. And also I'm getting about nine folder in my download file that say "dynamicchallenge" followed by number.

That has to do with the new achievements they put in game.

You looked in the normal Sims 3 folder and didn't find any files that start with xcpt?   TravelDB should only be in save files.  Don't look there.

This is what the folder & files will look like.    As you can see it's not .xcpt.  The files start with xcpt (short for exception).

I still have no files like that. I'm starting to think this may be a computer issue, it just doesn't make any sense that it's only crashing in CAS

Well, I just ran a Malware scan that found a program called vGrabber. Apparently it hijacks your internet browsers. COuld this have anything to do with the issue?

Nevermind, I deleted the virus and the game is slow, but it's running fine.
