Do I have to download Origin for Mac?

I am a Mac user and have always bought hard copies of the EP's and will continue to do so. But even if I do not plan on buying University from Origin, do I still need to download Origin anyways? Because Mac users are having issues with the new update and someone said they were able to update via Origin. So must I download Origin to be able to update my game from now on?

PC Users have to keep their Origin up to date to avoid issues so I can imagine they have tried to do something similar.  I didn't think the Mac patch was available yet.  If you download Origin and it doesn't help then no harm done and you can get rid of Origin on the computer easily enough.  As for the patch, a lot of people are having issues with it not just Mac users.   Origin isn't a horrible program.  It's no worse than using Steam or Skype.   You don't have to leave it up at all.  You can choose to never have it on.   

The best people to ask since Mac Origin is still so new would be EA customer service or to try it yourself.  If downloading Origin helps you with the patch, then you know it's probably just the nature of the beast unfortunately.

The patch is not available yet to Mac users, I was just asking for when the patch is available. I just wanted to be sure. I have used Origin before on PC but that was when the Sims 3 first came out and I only used it for a month, then got my Mac. So I just didn't know how it worked now that it was available for Mac users. Maybe someone will have a definite answer for me when a patch is actually available. But thank you for your help 

I will call EA if I need to, when a patch is actually available. SimGuruSarah said it may not be available by the time University is released, so I have no use for updating until then anyways. But I will call them if I need to.
