For professions....
I love Ghost Hunter and Firefighter, because it's interesting and quite enjoyable.
Singer too is awesome! I love to hear when they are perform. But I only love female sims version when it come to singing.

For regular job, I love law-enforcement.

For self-employed, I usually pick Painter or Writer a lot...

I currently don't have any expansion packs but am highly tempted to get ambitions to open up more careers. I prefer to start with a male sim who is self-employed to allow him to grow relationships quite quickly and not have to worry about how many hours he has free in the day.

To be honest, I have rarely full explore rabbit-hole careers but would stay away from sport if money is a problem.
