Downloading an EP with Origin
« on: February 09, 2013, 03:10:02 PM »
Hey everyone  ;D
At the moment, I've got all Sps and Eps up until Pets (Then I went on a Simming Hiatus, but I'm back!). I have physical copies of all the EPs, except for the Original, as I lost this disk.
Now, Origin are having a sale on all EPs/SPs, but only for the downloads, which really sucks because I'd prefer to have a Physical copy of Seasons (My EP of choice).
My question is, Does downloading affect how well the game the game runs, versus a physical game? Also, does anyone have the Pro's/Con's of buying a physical copy instead of a download?

(Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put it.)

That's strange - I just ordered a physical copy of Showtime from there, I had the option of ordering either the download or physical copy for the same sale price ($9.99). I also prefer to have the physical copy of the game, but that's just me.

There should be 2 checkboxes, one for Mac/Win download, the other for Mac/Win physical copy. If you click on Seasons without clicking either box, it'll take you directly to the "buy now" page with the download option as the default but you can still choose at that point.

I just realized, seeing that this is the internet and all - are you in the US or Canada? If not, maybe that's why the sale doesn't apply to the physical disc?

I'm in the UK, but the Downloadable option is half price, just not the physical  :(

There are a couple of advantages to having a physical copy -
1) You might still have that copy many years from now, when it is no longer available online, although whether it would work with the operating systems and media types of the future is anybody's guess.  There was a time when games came on floppy disks...
2) You don't have to wait for the software to download.  You would still want an internet connection for patching, however.

And a couple of disadvantages:
1) Physical disks can go bad, become damaged, or simply get misplaced.
2) When you install a game from disk, you are usually required to load that disk into the machine anytime you want to play.

I used to be a stickler for physical copies, but not so much anymore.  I have a few games on Steam, and a few with Origin.  I purchased the original TS3 base game on disk, but have purchased all of my EPs electronically.  Since I registered my base game with Origin, it is now also available for download.  I had purchased my first 2 EPs through Amazon (download versions), but registered the product keys with Origin, so they are now also available through Origin.  I used Carl's Origin link for the 2 additional EPs I've purchased.

When you purchase a physical copy and register the product keys on Origin, you actually have both forms available to you.

I guess the bottom line is to consider your personal reasons for preferring one over the other, and what those advantages / convenience / etc. are worth to you.

Something else to consider is if you decide to buy an expansion pack for the Origin exclusive DLC is a bit...problematic.  If you already registered your physical expansions (such as Pets 3), Origin will not allow you to repurchase the Downloadable version at all.  And I admit, I would like to see EA sell the Origin exclusive DLC through the Sims 3 store at some point..

However, if you wish to get the DLC what you will need to do is create a whole new Origin account, and purchase the expansion that has the DLC included (such as the cat and dog suits on Sims 3 Pets).  When you successfully purchase it, you will have two serial numbers...one is for the core expansion (such as Sims 3 Pets), and then the other is the Origin Exclusive DLC.

What is nice, though, is if you take that DLC serial number, log into Sims 3 with your primary account, and you can use the serial numbers from your new purchase and apply it to your old account.

And you make several good points Sarabi.  Of course, I know I used to only have dial-up (up until a few years ago), so physical copies was about the only sensible thing I could do (though it made patching a real bear)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Although it still may be a while until I get my Seasons game, I think I'll stick to the Physical Disk

What I never understand is why the US sale price of Showtime ($9.99) is so much lower than for uk customers (£14.99). It seems we have to pay approximately 2 1/2 times as much :(
