Possible Graphics Card Issue
« on: December 28, 2012, 06:09:43 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm really sorry if I am being a bit dim here but I would really appreciate some advice on my new laptop (dxdiag at end of message in case that helps?)

Bought it 2 days ago (really excited!) and installed Sims 3 and all expansion packs (in release order) and checked patches were up to date.

It will allow me to play it in a fashion (although has crashed once)
- except that graphics are very blocky (unless viewed from a long way OR zoomed in really close - can't seem to cope with the mid range view)
- some text is missing in little notifications in top right.
- Jockey lifetime wish isn't amassing simoleons to count towards the £40,000.
I have only played it for a short time so there may be other errors noticeable when I play for longer, but I've been trying aimlessly to fix it...........

I have been trawling the official Sims forum to see if I can find answers in the technical section and have tried a few things I found listed there, but when I try to post a query myself it won't accept it and comes back with error 404?!

As you can see from info below the spec is pretty reasonable, but what I am most concerned by is that the display adapter info is displaying Intel HD Graphics 4000, when there is also Radeon TM HD 7670M in there, only I have no idea if it knows to use it? (told you I was dim!)

I can't see any options to alter anything except in the 'configure switchable graphics' option when right clicking on the main desktop. I have set this to 'high performance graphics' when using the Sims 3 program, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

I have been in the 'Radeon Control Centre' and set anti aliasing and 3d operations to 'allow the program to set this itself' after I read a post to say this was preferable.

I've also checked for latest drivers and that is coming up that everything is working correctly, so I am at a loss now.

Please could you help me with this as it has taken the shine of what was initially a very exciting purchase.

Many thanks in advance
Lesley

Probably someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to help you with this, but I also find it odd that the Radeon graphics card isn't showing up as installed.  I have a laptop that has a similar set up, in that it has the two options in graphics cards, and both of mine show up when I'm looking at specs.

Following advice on the mods the sims forum, I went in and configured the graphics to use the good graphics card for the Sims, and it is all working beautifully now.  So that would have been my suggestion to you, but looks like you tried that.   But again, the overall fact that the radeon card isn't showing up is troubling.

Hope you're able to get some help with this!

Hi, Lesley.

Please make sure you check the HP support page here for instructions on how to enable the switchable graphics. If you still have problems, you may need to follow these instrunctions to force the laptop into Fixed Graphics mode.

Hope this helps. :)
