Can't enter eating contest

If I try to have a sim enter the festival eating contest, they walk up to the table and the food appears there...then the action vanishes from their queue and they just walk away.  Other sims will join and stand there like they're supposed to, but my own sim simply won't stay there and it just starts without them.  I also tried using the option to enter with another sim, but it just does the same thing.
