Way to not place house in middle of the lot?
« on: September 12, 2012, 11:37:56 PM »
I'm sure I've seen something about this, but I'm not finding my answer through the search function.

I like to take houses and remodel them, rather than building my own (as I'm not that great at that yet).  But sometimes I want to expand and have room for pools, gardens, etc., so I've been placing houses on bigger lots so I have space for that.  But of course the game plops the house right down in the middle of the lot, which is not an efficient use of space.

Is there a way to manipulate the house placement so it is not in the middle of the lot?  I do use cheats, and am happy to get more mods from Nrass or elsewhere if needed (I already use story progression, master controller, etc).

Any suggestions would be great--I feel like I'm missing something obvious here!

As far as I'm aware, you can't manipulate the placement of a pre-built home.

If your problem with building your own is planning.  Why don't you pick a small house (as an experiment) and place it on a lot.  Then with the grid on make a few rough sketches of the floor plans, elevation etc. then use these to make a copy on your chosen lot.  Doing this might increase your confidence and skill in building.

It might also be possible, with a small, uncomplicated house to use the pull tool to move the house.  I do this, if durring construction I decide it is placed too far forward, or back on my lot.  In construction, select walls then select the hand tool.  Place the hand on the wall you wish to move and a green arrow appears.  Pull the wall to where you need it.  The room will stretch.  select the opposite wall and pull that to towards the correct possition for your room.  Do this with each room until the house is where you want it.  You will need to remove stairs and roof to do this.  I don't suggest you try it if there is a basement or there are a lot of rooms.  Moving the upstairs can be very tricky too.  So try it first on a small bungalow.

I was hoping there was some way to change the placement of a prebuilt house in edit town, when placing a smaller house on a bigger lot that it was on originally, but it sounds like there may not be a way to do that.

Your idea about trying the pull tool with an uncomplicated house is worth trying though, so thanks for that!

I remember this coming up before and there's not a way to do what you want.  You'd pretty much have to rebuild the house a piece at a time to get it elsewhere on the lot.

I don't know if this will help, but what I have done is put a fence around the lot, added some trees here and there and that helps to give extra room.  If possible, move to a slightly larger lot and then go to a bigger lot.  Not sure which size you are moving from so that might not be an option, but I have done that.
I use the money cheat when I am fixing up a new home, or one for one of my sims in a family I am moving out.  Kids leaving the nest need to have a nice home to go too.

I'm not very good at building from scratch either; I enjoy remodeling a home to what I like.  The finished project sometimes doesn't look at all like the orginal  :)

Thanks for letting me know there isn't a way to change placement of the house in the lot.  Too bad--I like the idea of having a bigger lot with the house not in the middle so I have lots of space for pools, gardens, etc.  I'll just have to make do with the house in the center.

I did try using the hand tool to pull one house I'd made, and I think that might work to a degree, though I ended up running into other, unrelated problems.

Thanks for the suggestions!
