Thanks Louise.  The problem isn't that the system isn't recognizing my RAM.  It's that it's using all of it and then leaves none to actually process the game.   This is my dynasty file which is in generation 6's childhood.    The save file itself is over 2GB now.

Oh my! 2g is a lot. I think the memories must contribute to it.
It doesn't really help to delete it. I've tried believe me.

Of course modern systems use utterly fantastical lumps of RAM for graphics alone. I just wonder if it is all really necessary. But that's not the point of this thread. So basically I still think you can trim your processes down a bit and save perhaps half a gig on a system such as yours. I know it is not common practice though since the norm is to simply run some sort of program to keep background processes in check. They really can get out of hand. I don't trust those though. Some of them just aggravate the matter even further.

The problem I have with turning off processes in Task Manager is that I don't know what they do.  I'm afraid I'll shut down something that will mess me up.

I tell you what: if you want to, send me a screen shot of the processes tab about 5 minutes after startup via e-mail and I'll see what I can do. But what you can do by yourself for now is go to Start > Programs > Startup and see in that list what you don't want  starting up with your PC, if you'd rather just open it when needed. Like Picasa for instance. That may be on there. Just right-click right there and then, and delete the bugger. It's only a shortcut. Then shut down and restart your computer. It will now no longer run those (shortcut-deleted) systems unless you activate it. I believe my e-mail is visible in my profile.
