Family Tree
« on: July 08, 2012, 02:11:20 AM »
So first of all, this is my first post on here ever so I'm not really sure about how the forum works, please let me know if I need to change something.
Second of all, I had a family that was on its fourth generation in Appaloosa Plains. I kept a backup family tree on ancestry.com with the pictures from the in-game family tree, because I planned on moving some of my fourth-generation sims out of Appaloosa Plains to Bridgeport. I killed off all the family members that weren't already dead yet (many of them met their untimely deaths in tragic "accidents") so I could have the pictures of their ghosts for my backup family tree. Here comes the issue... I moved the two fourth-generation sims to Bridgeport, and now I can't access their family trees at all. By the way, I do know that you lose the out-of-household family tree when you move a household. That's not the problem, since I backed it all up. However, when I click on the family tree icon, nothing happens. At all. I Googled the issue and only found issues related to traveling and WA, but nobody in this entire family has ever traveled abroad, if you don't count free vacations from Generations. I do have WA, though, so if it has nothing to do with traveling but something to do with the expansion itself, that could be it. According to the launcher I'm playing the latest patch. Any ideas? I've already quit and restarted the game. I hope it doesn't come to uninstalling and reinstalling. Of course, with my backup tree I don't REALLY need the in-game one, but I use the pictures from there so it would be helpful.

Okay, sorry for the novel. If you have a fix please let me know. :) Thanks!

Well, even if the family tree was erased, it should pop up and show the picture of your current sims when you click the icon, so there seems to be something odd going on. I have a faint memory of having this happen to me on some old game but it was so long ago, I can't remember if I managed to fix it somehow or if the file got corrupted later.  :-\

May I still ask if you have the deceased family members with them, either the graves on their personal inventory or if you moved a whole house & lot, the graves on the lot?

Anyway, I do not think un-install/re-install would help, this is most likely a problem with this specific game file. If you just now started, you could try to start a new game and do the whole moving procedure again.

Welcome to our Forum, theCayleigh.

Like Noodles, I have a vague memory of the family tree not working.  I don't know if a patch from EA fixed the problem or if I just moved on to a new file and a new family.  I suggest checking any other game files you have and see if those family trees also don't work.  Start a brand new game and see if it works there.  If the problem is limited to the one particular file, you may just be experiencing a nasty bug that can't be fixed.

Thank you both, I'll have to try that and let you know how it goes. If I recall correctly (I was trying to find a fix all day yesterday) there was a patch that came out to fix broken family trees, but as far as I know, my family tree isn't broken, it just won't show up. I kept the file that I moved the sims from, so I'll see if the family tree in that town works. If it does, I'll make a new file and move them in and see how that works.

Edit: I went back to Appaloosa Plains with the same sims, family tree worked. Created a new Bridgeport file, moved in the sims, and the family tree did not work. Next up I'm going to try a townie family in Bridgeport and see if the family tree is functional there. :/ Wish me luck.

Edit 2: Matthew Hamming's family tree is intact. This seems to indicate that the problem is with the household I saved the the library
(?). I'll go experiment some more and keep you posted.

If all else fails, the NRaas Master Controller mod can be used to alter/recreate a family tree. See the sticky in the Mods forum for more information on it. If you aren't interested in using it long term, you can install, fix the tree, save your game, exit and uninstall.

Hey Zyffyr, thanks for that idea. I'm starting to seriously consider installing Master Controller and maybe a couple others, just for some of the additions that I've wanted for a long time. I'll check those out.

In case anyone was wondering if I ever fixed it, I didn't. I just decided to go back to the original Appaloosa Plains save where the family tree was still working. :/ In any case, I'm happy with my game right now.
